Who gets Ulcerative Colitis ?

Ulcerative Colitis affects about one in every 500 people in the UK. It affects women and men equally. UC can
start at any age, but it is rare in children under five and usually appears for the first time
between the ages of 10 and 40. The condition is most common in white people of European
descent, especially those descended from Ashkenazi Jews (those who lived in Eastern Europe
and Russia). We do not know why, but it is more common in urban rather than rural areas and
in northern developed countries, though the numbers are beginning to increase in developing
nations. The disease occurs more frequently in non-smokers than smokers, but health
professionals would not advise you to take up smoking or to continue to smoke, as the risks of
smoking to your health far outweigh any benefits seen in UC (see our information sheet:
Smoking and IBD).
