Signs and Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis and other conditions affecting the bowel – like parasitic, bacterial or viral infections – share the same immediate symptoms.
Laboratory tests, diagnostic examinations and complete physical check‐up are conducted on the patient to check if what he has are symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis.

The signs and symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis vary, from being mild to being severe. Some symptoms develop in time while, others are influenced by the season. The symptoms are at their worst during winter and at their mildest during summer.

There are three most common signs and symptoms that one is suffering from Ulcerative Colitis . These are diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Additional symptoms may also develop in other cases, like loss of weight, appetite loss and fatigue. There are also symptoms that may not have anything to do with the colon but are indicative of the disease.

Let’s take each of these three symptoms one at a time.

Diarrhea
You have diarrhea when you have three or more watery stools a day. When a person has Ulcerative Colitis, frequent trips to the restroom for a watery bowel are expected. Accompanying the stools is blood that is thick. This is different from the blood resulting from haemorrhoid, which are smears of bright red blood. Oftentimes, the blood is accompanied by pus or mucus. The type of food eaten by the person with ulcerative
colitis may worsen the symptoms. Doctors would usually prescribe a colitis diet if a person is suspected of having the disease.

Abdominal Pain
Persons with Ulcerative Colitis experience cramps pain in the abdomen, particularly the left side. This is because the rectum, which is located just above the anal area, moves left to connect to the colon. The cramps and pain subside right after a person’s bowel movement.

Fever
Like most illnesses involving inflammation, Ulcerative Colitis includes fever as main characteristics of the disease. The fever is usually high and reaches its peak during the acute flare‐up phase. Other patients experience consistent fever that is low‐grade. As a sign and symptom of Ulcerative Colitis, fever comes with a feeling of fatigue and irritability. The fever follows an erratic schedule too. It calms down during parts of the
day and catches up later in the day. It calms down again then resumes when the person goes to bed.

Other Symptoms Outside the Colon
Not all symptoms and signs of Ulcerative Colitis are found in the colon. There are a number of them that show up outside the colon. They occur either together with the other major symptoms and sometimes they show up weeks before the other symptoms appear.

Studies have not found yet why there are ulcerative symptoms outside the colon, although they suspect this is because of inflammation of other parts of the body caused by a malfunctioning immune system.

These signs and symptoms outside the colon are the inflammation and reddening of the eye; pains in the joints, lesions in the skin which includes tender nodules on the calves or shins and sores that develop in the mouth.
