What is ulcerative colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the largeintestine (colon) . The digestive tract (including the stomach, the small and large intestines ) converts food intonutrients, these are then absorbed into thebloodstream to fuel our body. The main role of the colon is to absorb water and saltscoming from the undigested food waste. thisfunction helps to thicken and strengthen the stools that arethen expelled from the body through the anus.Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation (rednessand swelling) and ulcers (sores ) along thecolonic mucosa , which can cause painabdominal pain, cramping, bleeding anddiarrhea. The disease usually develops inthe rectal area , which holds the stool until youyou were going to the bathroom , and in the long term, canaffect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis is classified underinflammatory bowel disease (COLITIS Ulcerative) , duethe inflammation that occurs in the intestines. oneAnother common form of IBD are Crohn's disease .Although the symptoms of ulcerative colitis are similarto those of Crohn's disease , conditions differseveral points.
Although ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are
both IBD, should not be confused with
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a condition affecting
muscle contractions and the sensitivity of the colon.
Unlike ulcerative colitis and disease
Crohn's disease, IBS does not cause intestinal inflammation or
damage to the intestines.
